Well it didn't take long to descend from the Penthouse to the S***house ...just one Saturday was all it took. One of the worst weekends for the average punter with abnormal results all over the country. Black Heart Bart who is so old he has been on the pension for the last three years bobbed up at Caulfield at the odds of 180/1. For the first time for decades no favourite won a race at Doomben on Saturday. It was just one of those weekends when only the bookies had smiles on their faces.!! Enough of the doom and gloom lets get back to a positive mode and hope the results return to some form of sanity tomorrow.
Generally speaking there are some very good races around on Saturday and we do see the return of some of the names that I like such as Osbourne Bulls, Santa Ana Lane, Sunlight and Mystic Journey. All are proven performers and should run well in their respective races.
As usual the early selections will appear today however there will be adjustments once the scratchings and late mail arrive.
Hopefully Saturday will see us with a profitable return on investments.
Sunday sees the Grand Final of the Rugby League Season with the Canberra Raiders and the Sydney Roosters contesting the outcome which should on form be won by the Roosters. Plenty of support for the underdog from the Canberra region who will all be decked out in their green replica Viking outfits to ensure this is a colourful match.
Today's highlight is the Group 1 Epsom Handicap which carries $1m in prizemoney The time honoured Metropololitan will follow the Epsom and again its a Group 1 race with $750K in prizemoney.
Should be an excellent days racing.

    R4 no 1 Guntantes...........No 2 Profit Won $2.10 is the obvious danger

This will be the last weekly information and tips forecast until I return from leave which will be the day before this years Melbourne Cup is run and won.
I'm pleased to report that I'm off to watch the semi's and finals game of this years World Cup in Japan as part of an Australian sports Group. My prediction at this stage is that the final will be between New Zealand and Wales and I have taken a couple of bets along these lines. I may trade these out in full or part prior to the final depending on how the markets and games shape up. I must admit I do enjoy these events and am looking forward to the trip. For those who have never visited Japan then you are missing out seeing a great country which I personally rank as the safest country in the world to travel to. Japanese are a very friendly lot and they keep their country relatively crime free and their cities clean. Its one of the easiest countries to travel around and I just love those fast trains and cold beers.
Tomorrow sees some good quality races as we get into the thick end of the Spring Racing Carnival and hopefully we can pluck a couple of nice winners for you from tomorrow's cards. Nice to see last weeks selections held their own and the Lay Bets did the right thing too.
As usual here are the early selections which will be updated and amended once the late mail and scratchings are received. (Heavy rain in Brisbane last night so have made some changes here as i expect the track to be sticky)
Enjoy the next few weeks and all going well I'll be back in time to update this years Melbourne Cup Day picks and lays.

R2 no 3 Rox The Castle Won $4
    R3 no 6 California Zimbol Won $5.10

Thanks PDC for your kind words. Very much appreciated. I will try and steer clear of typhoons and not to boo too often regarding any over the top yellow and red cards so all going well will be back in time to post tips and comments for the Melbourne Cup. Take care and thanks again for your comments and support.

Just returned from the land of the rising sun after a 30 hour plus travel trip back to Oz.
Have'nt had time to analyse the Cup properly so lets go with a few early selections plus some advice from fellow travellers and see how we fare.

    MELBOURNE CUP SELECTIONS:

MELB Race 7 no 11 Finche.......chances to numbers 1,2,6, 12 2nd,19 and 20 3rd and throw in a 100/1 chance in number 10 for good luck in the multiples.

Good luck with your investments and normal services will resume again on Saturday.

Thanks PDC. The trip was excellent. Japan is one of those countries that I really like and find it very easy to get around. It helps that I love fast trains and Japan has the best system in the world with its Shinkansen system. Japanese food is excellent and the local beer is cheap and pleasant to drink.
Rugby was good although I did think Wales were the unlucky team. At 16 all with six minutes to go they missed a field goal which could have been the difference as South Africa pinched a late penalty that gave them the game and entry to the big dance. Good aspects were the pleasant looking young Japanese women who carried 18kg of Heineken beer on their backs and poured you a cup of cold beer for 700 Yen and you didnt have to leave your seat. I think the Japanese underestimated the drinking capacity of rah rah followers as there were a shortage of toilets and very long queues. What we didnt like was the "closure" of exits at the end of the game particularly at Oita where we had a 3k walk back to a bus in the darkness. Whilst we appreciate the need for safety no one really thought that closing exits was a sensible solution.
This may sound funny but there is a big difference between Japanese bum sizes compared to the average Australian and Kiwi. The seats in all three stadiums we visited were clearly designed to cater for Japanese bums so we all had problems trying to position our bums on the small Japanese seats. Maybe that's something the organisers may like to look at prior to the upcoming Olympic Games.
Japanese people are very friendly and very helpful particularly if you get lost. At Osaka I couldn't find the Irish Pub so ended up in the red light area whereupon a very friendly lady addressed me by saying Hello Sexy!! Unfortunately my wife was close by and I was forced to dive into Google Maps and quickly find the pub's location so alas the conversation with my potential new friend didnt proceed past the opening remarks.!!
For those that have been to Japan you will know that people dont throw any litter on the streets or footpaths and if you drop any of your possessions they are very quick to let you know and to ensure you retrieve your lost items. Its a nice pleasant culture.
Back to the Rugby and cant say I was impressed with the English teams reactions after running second to South Africa. It was almost as though they went out there expecting that they had only to turn up to collect first prize. I'm sure that the English tabloids would have picked that up and its news in that part of the globe.
All in all that's my third Rugby World Cup and I thoroughly enjoyed the Japanese hospitality and the Sportsnet program and the company of fellow rugby followers including a group from the Goulburn Rugby Union Club who did their city and Club proud.
So there's my short summary of the trip and its back to business as usual from Saturday onwards.

Well the Carnival is not quite over yet as we have two $2 million dollar races set down for decision on Saturday. They are the time honoured Darley Sprint Classic and the Seppelt MacKinnon Stakes. Hopefully we can finish the carnival with a good result.
Two of my favourite horses in Santa Ana Lane and Widgee Turf (Scratched) are contesting and both have excellent chances of saluting.
Very dry conditions here in Brisbane today with a very high fire danger as bushfires are close to the city causing a smokey haze to envelope the city. Temperatures are around the 30deg mark and yesterday they topped 37deg so its a pretty warm period. Hasnt rained for at least a month and some are saying it wont rain here until next January.
As usual here are the early selections which will change as scratching's are known and the late mail is opened.

The silly season has arrived with metropolitan racing in the major states sent out into the sticks. Well I guess there is a winner in every race so we will do our best to find them. Woke up this morning to the sound of low flying helicopters heading north to contest some of the bushfires that are occurring around the Noosa area. Sadly there has been some loss of life and homes as the fierce bushfires continue to wreck havoc. We badly need rain as a dry countryside is an invitation to devastating fires which many believe 85% of such are created by humans.
Last week we started with a bang with a $7 winner and then a shortie at Rosehill however the tide turned thereafter and the results were well below par. Lets hope that despite the racing being out in the countryside the results are a big improvement on last week.
Here are the early selections which of course will be altered, amended and upgraded once the scratchings are known and the late mail is in.

    SUNSHINE COAST:
    R4 no 2 Sir Barnabus
    R5 no 4 Battle Strike..4th....no 5 Kalik Won $5 is the danger
    R7 no 3 Tarzan 3rd
R8 no 7 The Candy Man..Won $6.20.... backed in from 20/1...looks like it could get the chocolates at around $13. Save on no 15 Victory Eight ($11)
    R9 no 1 Better Reflection 2nd

    NEWCASTLE:
R3 no 12 Smart Moove....gave no 14 Denmiss a place chance at odds of $14 or better
    R4 no 8 Vitesse 4th
R5 no 1 Rule The World
R6 no 11 Renewal....good each way chance at $12 or better
    R7 no 7 Outrageous
    R9 no 9 Leviathan 2nd

    SANDOWN HILLSIDE
    R2 no 1 Sound
    R4 no1 Widgee Turf
    R5 no 2 Crystal Dreamer
R6 no 4 D'Bai....4th....have a saver on no 7 Order of Command at around $9
    R7 no 1 Banquo 4th
    R8 no 1 Humidor..4th...No 10 Miss Siska is a place chance at $12
    R10 no 4 Setting Sail 2nd

    LAY BETS:
MR3 no 4 Palurien Ran 2nd. Lay bet Won
MR7 no 11 Affair to Remember Ran unplaced. Lay bet Won
MR8 no 3 Gallic Chieftain Ran unplaced. Lay bet Won
SCR7 no 7 Meet Mr Taylor Started Fav. Ran 2nd. Lay bet Won

Not happy with some of the recent results so time to rearrange the deck chairs. Some of my usually reliable sources are simply not as reliable as they used to be so as from this Saturday I will be dropping two and adding three others and hopefully that will see an improvement in results. Lay bets will remain as is however I'll add back Western Australia for two reasons one of which is they are now entering their carnival period until New Years Day and the results from there are normally consistent. It will mean that the late mail will be delayed for Western Australia only, as the scratchings will be at least 90 minutes in arrears but it may give some of you in the UK an opportunity to bet on some of the selections as they will still be running when your breakfast time arrives.
Lets see how we go and if need be we can always make further changes if necessary. All suggestions are welcome so feel free to post your thoughts hereunder at any time.
As usual the early mail is below but be warned that changes will occur as scratchings are known and the late mail is received.
Unfortunately the meetings at Sydney and Melbourne have been sent to the bush however we'll do our best to pick a few winners.

    R5 no 3 Ashman 2nd

R5 no 1 Cant Be Done.2nd...give no 5 Rocking Eagle some chance at around $9
    R6 no 1 Bumper Blast

Queensland is still in the middle of a pretty serious drought and as if to emphasize this the dam at the local Eagle Farm racecourse is almost empty. In order to water the training track and the racetrack the cost will be $50,000 per week. Racing in Queensland is doing it tough so an extra financial burden such as a hefty water bill isn't going to be exactly palatable. We have had just one short period of about one hour of rain in the past month so hopefully the predicted storm on Sunday will produce much needed heavy rainfalls.
Good to see the return to metro tracks this weekend which should in theory at least make the task of finding winners a bit more predictable. Still tinkering with the deckchairs and hopefully the fine tuning will be reflected in better results.
As usual the early selections will be posted today and they will change as scratchings and the late mail is received.
Hope your day is a profitable one and thanks again to BOG and PDC for posting thank you's.

Well another Saturday looms amid the extreme summer that we having particularly in Queensland where the temp outside is officially 36deg Celsuis.
That means we need to exercise some care here with the selections as high temperatures affect horses as it does jockeys and trainers. We do have limits in racing here these days and if the temp simply gets too high then the ref blows the whistle and play is suspended or cancelled completely.
A number of mergers of betting agencies have occurred of late which sadly reduces the opportunities to nip a few overs. Sportsbet is now the major player here which is not good news for punters like me as they restricted my betting sometime ago and I just hate having my bets reduced by some over zealous supervisor. On top of that bonus bets are being restricted as are sign on offers. Sign of the time me thinks so one just has to be versatile and patient these days if you want to come out on top.
Early selections will be posted today and these will be altered, amended, added or subtracted wherever necessary when the scratchings are known and the late mail has been delivered. Updates will occur as the day progresses time permitting.
Hope you have an enjoyable and profitable day.

Re: Sportsbet, why do you not bet on the Betfair exchange? You can set your bet as an SP bet so you can place them at a time to suits.

I really like reading your weekly updates about all things Australia based!

Good luck with this weeks bets.

Thanks PDC. Sportsbet stopped my participation in promos when I had a $200 each way bet on a mates horse. They monitored every bet and referred them to a Supervisor who would cut my bet down sometimes significantly. Reason I was betting with them because their markets go up early and my mates horse is a good example of why I was betting with them as it went up 50/1 and ended up starting at 6/1. It ran third. So after that I was a marked man. Subsequently I have been banned from Bet Easy, Ladbrokes, Bet 365, to name a few plus believe it or not, the Qld and NSW Tabs. The clear message in Australia is that you are most welcome to bet with us providing you lose........otherwise you can bugger off.
Yes I do use the Fair and the SP facility however there are still a number of On Course Licenced Bookmakers that will take my bets and one in particular offers a range of choices such as being able to bet on a horse and receive the top fluctuation as your winnings. Just in case the big bet on my mates horse gives you the impression I,m a big punter that,s not the case as most of my bets are significantly well below that level. Thanks for your kind words and I'm delighted that you enjoy reading the preambles. Cheers.

Still very very hot here in Brisbane and a consistent smoky haze around but nowhere near as bad here as it is in Sydney. We desperately need rain and the rain gods have not been kind to our part of Brisbane as they have successfully managed to deny us the watery stuff despite some very loud thunder and associated lightning. Its so bad I'm even thinking of going to church to ask for some wet blessings however as its been quite a while since I frequented such an institution I'm afraid that there is a high degree of risk associated with the roof falling in as a result of my presence!
Just to add to the hard-luck story re rain we had a storm late yesterday that caused flooding to the Gold Coast and South Brisbane and it was heavy enough to cause the cancellation of the last four races at Doomben. We live within a short drive time of Doomben yet our rain gauge recorded sod all as the rain gods once again left us high and dry!!

Horses generally don't like hot conditions and as we found out last week after some hot prospects ended up being anything but.
Hopefully the winners will return and the results will be sufficient for our carry over bank to do it all again the following week.
Here are some of the early selections and of course these will be updated early tomorrow as the scratchings and late mail are received.

Difference between the penthouse and the shithouse can sometimes be as close as a whisker. Last Saturday I took a healthy each way bet on Illustrious Lad at $16 and laid the favourite Quackerjack. The camera angle at the finish favoured Illustrious Lad and even the commentator nominated it as first past the post. But then the official camera angle was shown and this ended up favouring Quackerjack by a nose. The difference meant a small loss versus a nice sum that would have paid for the grandkids Chrissie presents.
Has been a tough time here in Oz as temperatures soar to all time highs and race meetings are cancelled. Yesterday the temp got to 44deg Celcuis at Port Kembla. Melbourne today will also reach 44deg whilst Adelaide will encounter a scorcher of 46deg. Race meetings at Moonee Valley today and Morphettville have already been cancelled and tomorrow will probably see other meetings cancelled as well. Adding to the mix here are some of the worst bushfires in our nation's history which continue to surround our cities with a screen of smoke. Here in Brisbane we are still awaiting rain which is predicted for next Tuesday however if recent events are any guide I wouldnt be betting on any noteworthy falls in this area.
On a happier note if you are a reader of this or any other Geekstoy forums please accept my best wishes to you and yours for a happy Christmas and a great New Year and may Santa be kind to your racing investments for all of 2020.!!
The early selections are below and as per normal there will be amendments and additions to the list as scratchings are known and the late mail is received. Time permitting there will updates to the results thoughout the day.

The true spirit of Christmas arrived courtesy of some rain clouds accompanied by an orchestra of thunder and lighting. Ye olde swimming pool is now approaching the high tide mark and the reserve tanks are full so the pressure is off to continually top up to avoid a pump meltdown. Good news is that a large part of Queensland and northern New South Wales also received heavy falls and this will assist in alleviating the serious drought that Australia has been experiencing in recent times. The sky's have returned to a bright shade of blue in contrast to the smokey haze that has covered them for the past month or so. It also brings some relief for the horse racing industry in terms of feed, water, and softer training tracks along with the reduced risk of more bushfires.
Results of late have been a mixed bag so I will looking at alternatives for next year as some of my normally reliable sources have proved to be nothing of the sort in recent weeks.
Early selections will be posted today and of course these will change as the scratchings and late mail arrive.
May I wish you all a very Happy New Year and may your punting banks triple in the year ahead.

As you have probably heard on the news Australia is currently experiencing some serious bushfires that have claimed several hundred homes and several lives. Living in the Australian bush is a lifestyle embraced by many but it does come with serious risks during summer when the chances of a bushfire coming your way are increased. Many do take precautions such as keeping their lots free of dead timber and dry grass however many dont because they have beliefs that the bush should be kept as nature intended. They ignore the past practices of aboriginals that deliberately lit fires during the winter periods in order to reduce the fuel load so that the impact of any summer fires was reduced. I am mindful of the actions of State Governments here and in particular the State Government of Queensland who fined a man almost $1m for clearing a fire break on his own property. Then we had the case of a Victorian who cleared trees and shrubs within 100 meters of his home because they were a fire hazard. He was fined $100K. So whilst we have State Governments and Local Councils who put the bush ahead of the protection of human life then unfortunately Australia will continue to have devastating bushfires that bring with it loss of property and lives and in Canberra's instance some serious smoke that rated it's air quality as the worst city in the world.

UPDATE: There are dire predictions for extreme and deadly bushfires in Victoria and southern New South Wales today. Temperatures are expected to hit 46deg Celsuis. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are in these areas and we hope that they remain safe during these trying times. I do have several members of my family in and around Canberra and they are all struggling with the severe temps and poor air quality.

Its a new year and welcome all and one to 2020. Lets hope the results are favourable and our punting bank balances increase throughout the new year.
Here are the early selections for tomorrow's races which could change drastically if the expected increase in winds and temperatures hits us and if they do it may force the cancellation of racing particularly in the southern States. Hopefully it wont be a Black Saturday and we can progress through the meetings without interruptions.
Amendments will occur as scratchings and the late mail arrives.
    Good luck with your investments.
