Horse Racing in OZ

Racing NSW has done it again. Effective from July 1st they have increased the race fields legislation fee to Betfair from 1.5% up to 2% and increase of 33.33%. But it gets worse. They have introduced fees for non standard races which are referred to as Premium race days to 2.5%. But wait it gets worse. They have also introduced a new level of Race Days known as Premier race days and the fee for those days is a whopping 3%.

Now surely it can't get any worse than that but you guessed it...it does.!!
The increases are based on what is known as the Turnover model. That means that Betfair pay a fee on ALL of their turnover. If you trade say $100 on a horse by backing it and then laying it at say the same price, Betfair are charged on the turnover of $200. With all other state racing bodies in Australia the model in place is the Revenue Model and the fee payable under the example above would be NIL.

So what does this mean in practical terms. Well if we look at other States in Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, Queensland. South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory the Betfair punter is charged a fee of 6% which includes the race legislation fee and Betfair commission.
For a punter who bets on New South Wales racing the fee will now be a whopping 10%. And yet again it gets worse because of the NSW Turnover model so Betfair will severely limit anyone who trades on the NSW racing events.
And to put it in perspective as to how serious this increase is, then to quote Betfair "Racing NSW is now the most expensive product in the world that Betfair offers to its customers"
Little wonder that racing in Australia is going backwards in terms of attendances and turnover when Racing bodies continue to attack the punter rather then look at other sources such as Owners and Breeders.

Racing in Brisbane switches out to Ipswich today where the track is a heavy(8) thanks to some large rainfalls during the week.Its a popular day for the locals where the highlight is the running of the Channel 7 Ipswich Cup. Its a nine event program and despite the heavy track there are maximum fields nominated so picking winners there today wont be easy.
Lets hope we can find a few more winners today than we did last week.

Spotlight is on Brisbane today with the running of the Stradbroke Handicap at Doomben. Its a race worth AUD$1.5m in prizemoney and this is only the second time its been run at Doomben. Normally its at Eagle Farm however there is a monumental $10m stuff up there with the new grass track which wont drain properly and has been declared unsafe. Yet again the taxpayers will be called upon to fix this problem at a time when racetrack crowds are vanishing. With a Queensland election on the horizon my bet is that we will have a new Racing Minister within a year.
Dags managed to snare a 130% profit with his tips last week so he continues his fine form since he joined this column. He will have more to smile about as the week progresses and the State of Origin rugby league match takes place on Wednesday 21st June. NSW will be odds on to win this and should do so easily.

Well the New South Wales State of origin team soundly beat the Queenslanders who simply did not turn up to play hard tough rugby. Dont think they will rebound in the next two matches so unfortunately I predict a white wash (or should that read blue wash?) in this years contest.

Morning all.
Its that time of the year again when Rugby League takes center stage for the first of the three State of Origin games between Queensland and New South Wales. The bookies have NSW slight favorites with the line at 1.5 points to Queensland. These games are always great to watch and of course I'll be cheering on the Cane Toads whilst Dags will be supporting the Sky Blues. Should be fun.
Today the focus remains on Eagle Farm with plenty of Group races with the highlight being the Group 1 $700,000 Darley Kingsford- Smith Cup over 1300m.
I dont need to tell you that The Brisbane Lions were thumped by the Adelaide Crows last Saturday night by 80 points however the German Club was excellent and the company was great. Still havent fully recovered from the excessive alcohol consumption but I'm almost there!!

There were some dreadful results last week so the bookies had a field day. Lets hope its our turn this week. Brisbane has had some heavy rain in the past 48 hours however the sun is shining as I pen this and racing at Doomben is on despite the Heavy 9 track. The Gold Coast has had its racing abandoned for the day. Flemington and Rosehill and Morphettville are all on so we will still get a good selection of saturday racing to choose our selections from.
Wont be able to update fully today as I'm off to watch the Brisbane Lions get slaughtered by the Adelaide Crows. Think I'll take the 50 points start Brisbane so I have some chance of getting a good run for my money. Otherwise its an early departure for the nearby German Club for some good old German beer, sausages and sauerkraut.

My poor old computer completely shit itself last week so my apologies for no posts of tips or results. Had to dive into the bank balance and shout myself a completely new set up.
