The return of Spring at last and it brings with it some of our best racehorses as they chase the big bucks that Group races have on offer. Tracks are all Good on the eastern seaboard with lovely warm sunshine with the possible exception of Moonee Valley where the sun is competing with layers of cloud.
Enough of the ramblings ....lets see if we can pick a few winners again today and hopefully get a hotpot beaten with the Lay Bets. Almost made the Fav (Houtzen) in the Mitty's Stakes a lay because its the first time clockwise racing for this horse and has drawn awkwardly in Barrier 6. However its a local horse so despite my head saying its a clear risk my heart would like to see it win.
Here are todays selections and updates will be done throughout the day as the meetings progress.

    MOONEE VALLEY:
    R1 no 9 Spainish Reef 2nd
    R4 no 7 Harlow Gold
    R5 no 7 Houtzen (wishful thinking???) 3rd

    R2 no 1 Suncraze Won $2.80

    R6 no 8 Ravi Won $8
    R8 no 13 Zumberlina Won $5

    R5 no 5 Gatlinburg Won $7
    R6 no 1 Mr Epic 3rd

Spring is almost here and that heralds the return of the very best in our country seeking the big prize money that our Carnivals provide. Last week we were witness to the return of Winx, the best horse currently racing in Australia and certainly up there as one of the best in the world. It missed the start due to a bungle in the stalls and was tailed off last in an unsuitable sprint race. The jockey quietly made up ground however was still last when the short straight arrived for the sprint home. Of course it stormed down the outside and picked up the leader within the shadows of the post as only a champion can.
Todays racing is competitive wherever you look so winners wont be easily found. The racing at Brisbane has been sent to the Gold Coast where large fields are the order of the day.
Lets hope we can find a few winners and time permitting will update whenever I can.
    Here are todays selections:

Its around 7.30am as I write this. The current temperature is 14deg here and is expected to reach 26deg. Its a cloudless blue sky outside with no wind. Such are the hardships that we Brisbanites have to put up during winter.!! Last week was a reasonable result and good to see the Lay Bets return to profit. Hopefully we can repeat the dose again today. This post will be updated throughout the morning as scratchings emerge and the tip sources come through. Of course if I have time I will post the results progressively during the day.

Sunny weather around today where tracks are good and a soft 5 at worse. Very little Group or black type racing around the country today which is typical of our scene during winter. Wont be long before Spring returns and when it does the good horses come out to play. So until that occurs we will continue to plod through the Benchmark class racing and do our best to find you a winner or three.
Here are todays selections and with a bit of luck there will be regular updates as go along today.

The week that was saw some surprising results. Three of the top four men are out of Wimbledon and the British Lions almost caused a devaluation of the New Zealand dollar by being in a winning position against the All Blacks with less than five minutes to go. The draw was as controversial as Jeff Horns fight result. The Queensland Maroons rearranged their team and without their star player in Thurston they demolished the Blues 22-6. Sorry Dags. Maybe next year if you can find a good coach!!.
Today sees the local racing shunted up to the Sunshine Coast as Brisbane continues to suffer from the hopefully temporary closure of Eagle Farm. The Sunny Coast track must be the most utilised track in Australia with about 60 races on there per annum. The Gold Coast and Darwin would be their only competition I think if there was a contest for Australia's most raced on track every year.
Here are today's selections and lets hope that the winter doldrums have moved on.

    CAULFIELD:
    R4 no 1 Kiwia 4th
    R5 no 5 Show A Star2nd
    R6 no 1 Revolving Door 2nd
    R7 no 7 Supido Won $2

    ROSEHILL:
    R6 no 1 Sir Plush 2nd
    R7 no 1 Gold Symphony
    R8 no 3 Collateral Won $7

    SUNSHINE COAST:

R4 no 1 Bring It home Pop Won $2
    R5 no 7 Cashing Up
    R6 no 4 Stella Ombra Won $4

    LAY BETS

MR9 no 8 Schism Started $2.60fav. Won. Lay bet lost.
SR9 no 2 Reneged. Started 2nd Fav. Ran unplaced. Lay bet won

Well last week we went from the penthouse after the previous result to the shithouse. Probably one of the worst days on the racing calendar for results this year however it is winter and these off days seem to pop up around this time. So today we batten down the hatches and sail on regardless. This Wednesday the final game in the NRL's State of Origin matches takes place with Queensland v NSW. My money will be on NSW as I think the Queensland team is soft in comparison and they will miss the likes of Thurston. Today New Zealand faces the British Lions at Eden Park and my money is on the All Blacks to win by more than 11.5 points as they will be still hurting from the last Test loss and will out for revenge.
Here are todays selections and as usual updates will occur, time permitting.

    FLEMINGTON:
R4 no 1 Royal Symphony Won
R8 no 7 Ability....Won $3.50...each way danger is Husson Eagle

    WARWICK FARM:
    R6 no 2 Spending to Win 2nd
    R7 no 6 Zayam

    DOOMBEN:
    R4 no 1 Loving Home
    R8 no 5 Cruising Speed

    LAY BETS:
MR6 no 5 Hursley Ran unplaced. Lay bet won
BR5 no 4 Sheiswhatsheis Started fav. Won $3.90. Lay bet lost

    BETFAIR BSP estimate is 90.5.

Nice to see a positive result last week. Racing this weekend is at Caulfield and Rosehill whilst Brisbane racing takes a stroll to the north where the Sunshine Coast will play host. Interesting discussion amongst some locals regarding the accuracy of track ratings of late. Seems the jockeys are of the view that there have been several tracks that should have been rated Heavy and not Soft. Of course the cynics argue that Race Clubs dont like Heavy ratings because it turns away some attendees, punters and decreases field sizes. I'll let others be the judge here.!!
Todays selections follow and of course the results will be progressively updated if time permits.
    CAULFIELD:
    R1 no 3 Lone Eagle Won $3.60

It never ceases to amaze me how racing continually shoots itself in the foot. The decision by Racing NSW is in my view a clear attempt to try and get rid of Betfair out of the scene by simply raising taxes until the level of unsustainability is reached. Racing is dependent on Government support and its ability to attract particpants. Its bad enough that the Corporates close your account for reasons that have been widely discussed and noted. However to try and drive Betfair out of the picture in the vain hope that everyone will return to the local TAB is plain stupid. We already have a serious problem with offshore bookmakers and all the removal of Betfair from Australia will do is to drive the punting dollar offshore or to other areas such as the football codes. The day will come when Governments will simply not continue to fund racing and its costly infrastructure. This will occur when crowds and turnover levels diminish not that far below where they are today so the game that Racing NSW is playing is shortsighted and potentially harmful to the longterm viability of the industry.
Now that I have that off my chest here are todays selections.

    DOOMBEN:

    BR1 no 15 Cruising Speed Won $5
    Br 5 no 1 Rudy Won $3.25
    Br 6 no 1 Religify Won $3.30
    Br7 no 3 In Her Time 3rd
    Br8 no 2 Deploy...4th..each way chance Dothraki.

    RANDWICK:
    R2 no 4 Memes Won $3.50
    R4 no 2 Atlantic Sentinel
R5 no 2 Richard of Yorke

    FLEMINGTON:
    R7 no 11 Zagaya 2nd
    R8 no 6 Loyalty Man
R9 no 3 Samovare Late Scratching

    LAY BETS:
MR1 No 2 Royal Symphony Won $1.95 Fav. Lay bet lost
MR8 no 2 Tshahitsi Ran 3rd. Lay bet won
SR1 no 4 The Last StarfighterRan 2nd. Lay bet won
SR9 no 6 Wild Acclaim Ran unplaced. Lay bet won

BETFAIR BSP Estimate is 113.5 Actual is 101.5 so todays bet is Overs.

Here is the official Betfair news release in respect of the charges raised by Racing NSW.

In mid-May, Racing New South Wales (RNSW) notified Betfair that from July there would be a 33% increase in the fees paid for Standard Meetings.

From July, 56% of any revenue generated by Betfair on NSW thoroughbreds will be paid to RNSW. This is before any taxes and operating costs to offer and market this product are paid.

The increase by RNSW means that even a standard mid-week NSW thoroughbred meeting would now be 51% more expensive than the Melbourne Cup. Across all meeting types, RNSW is now the most expensive product for Betfair to offer in the world.

Unfortunately, the increase in fees from RNSW has resulted in us having to increase the Market Base Rate on all Racing NSW races from 8% to 10%, from July 1 2017. We are also re-introducing the Racing NSW Turnover Charge.

Betfair customers can continue to enjoy other thoroughbred racing jurisdictions, such as Racing Victoria, Racing Queensland, Tasracing and Canberra Racing Club at the lower rate of 6%.
