Weather here has been a bit on the crazy side with excessive heat dominating the scene. Thankfully the indicators are that the temperatures will drop below 30deg Celsius shortly and we can get back to some sort of normality. Last Saturdays results were awful with the only highlight being the wins of two of the four Hail Mary bets, one of which paid $27.90, which saved my punting bank from finishing in the red. Number two son had his first win as an owner when Coastal Raider won well at Grafton on Sunday. The Raider enjoyed a comfortable sit in behind the pace and sprinted away in the straight to win well. I think he is still celebrating!! My old mate Screatch had a win too at Mackay at $24 which helped the coffers considerably. Have Coolmeans (Won $9) running around in Race 3 at Townsville on Friday. Barrier 11 wont help but he is an honest old horse and might just fluke a place at odds. His stable mate Focus (3rd) goes around in Race 4 and he is a place chance despite the outside barrier.
Highlights of Saturdays racing will be the running of the time honoured Golden Slipper which is a set weights race for two year olds. The first race was run in 1957 and its been an annual race on our calendar ever since. First winner was Todman and other noteable winners include Vain, Luskin Star and Bounding Away. The most talked about Slipper race was the win by Belle De Jour which buckjumped at the start and dropped out last. In the run to the post Belle De Jour shot through the middle of the pack and stormed home to win narrowly. Part owner was well known Sydney personality John Singleton, who was so impressed he shouted drinks for every punter in the Public Bar until the final race was over. When asked how big the bar bill was Singleton simply said "a lot!" But who cares when he stated afterwards that he had placed a $100,000 bet with Bookmaker Colin Tidy at 10/1 and collected $1m clear for the win. Ah those were the days!!

Saturday's fields and tips will go up progressively as we near start times and fingers crossed that this Saturday will be a winning one and all of my Lay Bets fail to salute!!

Every now and again you run into one of those weeks where little goes right. Its been one of those weeks as I write commencing with last Saturdays results which were, lets just say well below par. Then to add to the sorrow one of our best friends saw the dogs bowl in the middle of the driveway as she was driving out in her large 4WD, stepped out to grab it and was hit by the drivers open door and knocked partly under her 4WD which managed to pin her there. Fortunately her screams were heard by her son who happened to be home on a rare day off and he quickly called triple zero and they arrived to find her with most of her ribs crushed and broken. Three other ambulances also arrived including one that has a small operating theater inside and they went to work to keep her alive. She is now in hospital in Brisbane still in a serious condition but expectations are she will survive. Lets hope Saturdays race results are much better than what's happened in the past week.!!
Have a runner at Townsville on Friday in the form of Coolmeans. (5th) He wont beat the favourite Demon Award (4th) but hopefully he can grab second place and some decent prizemoney! Number two son has Coastal Raider (Won) running at Grafton on Sunday. Topweight Shaggy Rogers(4th) will be hard to beat, but the Raider is a rough chance if it gets to the front and is allowed to bowl along.
Here are the venues for Saturday's races and as per usual the tips and selections will go up on Friday followed by the late mail on Saturday.
Fingers crossed for a good day on the punt!

Nice to see a total of nineteen win bets last Saturday. That's the goal that's expected for every Saturday however Lady Luck doesn't visit the site as often as I would like so a lesser number of winners normally prevail. Lets hope this Saturday is a good one on the grizzly grunt.
Venues are a little different this Saturday with Ascot in Perth taking a rest in favour of running an event at Bunbury. And not to be outdone Brisbane has handed their meeting over to the Gold Coast where the surf meets the turf!!.
Here are the venues for Saturday. Tips will go up shortly followed by the Late Mail on Saturday morning then its off and racing for another day where the outcome rests firmly in the Lap of the Gods!!
Big race here in Oz today is the running of the time honoured Newmarket Handicap Race 5 at Flemington. The favourite is the New Zealand visitor in Imperatriz who has raced 24 times for 18 wins and prizemoney of around $6m. Plenty of knockers around to say she cant win with 58 kgs on her back, however champions seem to find a way to be the first to salute. Danger is Magic Time at around $8.

Gotta say Firky you were unlucky to pick the only lay bet that lost on a day where there were nineteen winners in total with the best being Boab Boy at $10.30 !!
Notwithstanding the above I will try harder to make it three successful lays for next week!! But then I did back the Broncos to win in Las Vegas yesterday so maybe I need to realign the crystal ball!!
    Cheers.

Some nice quality racing appears this Saturday with the running of the Verry Elleegant Stakes and Surround Stakes at Randwick and the Australian Guineas, and the Blamey Stakes at Flemington. Cant see anything that's likely to beat Fangirl in the Group One Verry Elleegant Stakes but unfortunately she will be at short odds.
Had a runner during the week in the form of Coolmeans who finished 3rd. Would have been closer if he hadn't tried to bite the horse next to him prior to the winning post. Trainer wasn't happy so no treats for poor old Buddy for a while! His stablemate in the form of Focus won the next race so that helped the punting bank. Number two son has Coastal Raider in at Grafton on 7th March in Race 5. Looks like a tough race but I'm sure he will run well based on his last run at the Doomben course. Wife is very unhappy because her horse Strawberry Lady fell over on a boat ramp where the trainer was taking her for a swim. That will put her prep back a few weeks adding to the many frustrations that have occurred with SL over the past couple of years. Oh the joys of racehorse ownership!!
There are some strange stories circulating around race courses and racing folk from time to time but this one I read about yesterday takes the cake!

"Former trainer Todd Balfour has been disqualified for five years after "dacking" a Racing South Australia compliance officer in front of other participants. The offence took place at the Kangaroo Island racecourse (just south of Adelaide) in February."
Personally I think it was a bum rap!!

Here are the venues for Saturday racing in Oz. Selections will follow on Friday and the late mail will tidy things up on Saturday morning.
Hope your investments return an acceptable dividend.

Well there we were sailing along with 13 winners on the scoreboard, and some 8 place-getters as well, and then along came the meeting at Pinjarra Park, and everything then went to putty. That's the worst result from a Western Australian meeting that I can recall ever with just one lousy winner from the nine event program. How did I feel about the Pinjarra Park results? Bit like the cartoon image below!! Excuses? Well it was a very hot day and the lead up days had also been hot so that's got to have an effect on racehorses, as well as jockeys, and the track is only used when the Belmont & Ascot tracks are being rested. But that doesn't fully explain such a poor result. Lets hope that was just one of those off days that we experience from time to time and look forward to this Saturday and a return to normality. Fingers crossed!!
I do have one nominated to race next Tuesday at Townsville in the form of Coolmeans (Ran 3rd). Its a 1400m race and he has drawn barrier 3 so I think he must be in with some chance going on his first up run. The market framers don't like him so I'm expecting a decent price at double figure odds. .
Here are the respective venues for Saturday. Selections will go up on Friday followed by the Late Mail & Hail Mary Bets on Saturday morning (AEDT) . Lets hope the Betting Gods smile on us this time around!

Another Saturday of racing approaches and lets hope that we can go one better (or more) on last week where we managed to notch up 17 winners. Wife has Strawberry Lady (Ran 4th) running around at Grafton in Race 5 on Saturday, in a 1310m maiden race. Its drawn barrier 3, which will help, and must be some chance as its been placed second in its last two races. I also have one going around next Tuesday in Race 9 at Townsville in the form of Coolmeans.(Ran 5th) He will probably need the run. His stablemate Focus (Ran 3rd) is also in the same race and he would be my preference as he is racing consistently. Number two son has Coastal Raider (Scr) nominated for Grafton on Thursday so plenty of action this week for the family!! Very heavy overnight rain here in Brisbane last night and continuing on this morning. Rain gauge recorded 140mil overnight in just 12 hours Swimming pool has gone up 6 inches (15cm) so that's enough rain to fill the tanks and keep the lawns and gardens happy for a while. Outside temperature today is expected to go up to only 28 deg Celsius, that's a drop on all of the recent humid temps which have been an uncomfortable 30 deg Celsius plus. Here is a photo example of just how much rain has come down in Brisbane in the last 24 hours!! .

Here are the venues for Saturday's events. Tips will go up on Friday and late mail will appear on Saturday morning. (Brisbane time!)

Nice to see the figures starting to return to "normal" with 16 winners,7 seconds and 3 thirds last Saturday. Lets hope we can better that on Saturday.
Number two son has one going around at Doomben on Saturday. Don't give it much hope as its a tough field, however if you want to back Coastal Raider at around 25/1 or better then you'll find it in Race 5. On the positive side it has run a place in five of its seven starts including one win. Not to be outdone the missus has one circulating on Monday at Ballina (Race Meeting Abandoned) in the form of Strawberry Lady. Change of trainer seems to have helped her as she was quite nervous but is slowly settling down. Maybe she can go one better on her last two second placings?.
Here are the venues for Saturday Racing in Australia. Selections and track updates will follow as we get closer to start times.
Best wishes for a successful day on the grisly grunt.
NOTE: I'm off to watch Coastal Raider go around at Doomben today so race result updates wont occur until late this afternoon. I do have an invite into the Members area so if I end up Brahms and Liszt then it may be as late as tomorrow morning before results are posted.!! Apologies in advance.

The weather gods have gone crazy. First we have very high daily temperatures and humidity and then that's followed up by large chunks of rain. For example rainfall here in Brisbane in just one day exceeded 180mls; however a neighbouring suburb received 340 mls. Temperatures have exceeded 30deg Celsius for most of the days so coupled with high humidity life here hasn't been laid back as it normally is. But the good news is that racing here in Oz is surging along. Some facts are that racing in Australia provides around 75,000 full time jobs and a truckload of part time jobs. Prizemoney has gone from $491m in 2012-23 to more than $855m in 2020-21 which was the last year that I have figures for. The Everest (well named!) is the richest race on turf in the world in 2020-21 with prizemoney of AUD $20m. And how do punters fare...well I cant tell you how much they win because I don't know however they collectively average total turnover of $80m per day Other stats are the total of number of racecourses in Oz are around 380, there are 3520 registered trainers, about 800 jockeys and around 35,000 registered racehorses.
There are some concerns about problem gamblers and the word is that bookmakers will be restricted in how they operate and this in turn could see reduced holds and reduced contributions to the industry. There are also concerns that the existing heavy workload is creating fatigue amongst the participants. Changes to how the system operates in the future could see a reduction in working hours for stable personnel, jockeys and trainers. Time will tell.
I do have one going around at Townsville on Thursday in the form of Coolmeans. He is a handy horse and has more than paid his way so far as a betting proposition, but I expect he will need the run (Ran 7th) as he is first up from a spell. Wife has Strawberry Lady (Scr) going around in race 2 on Tuesday at Grafton. Trainer is happy with her and expects her to do well.
Big day at Ascot on Saturday with a mammoth program of 12 races.
Last week we had 11 winners and 8 seconds. Lets hope we can improve on that on Saturday.
Best wishes for a successful day.
NB: Off to a function in the city this afternoon so some updates re results wont appear until Sunday.
