Best way to hide my IP address

I'm after some advice as to the best way to hide an IP address?
I've seen some reasonably cheap software that claims to do it I'm not sure whether it is likely to be any good or even if it is needed at all.

If anyone has any knowledge or experience on the matter I'd appreciate some advice.

I'm talking browsing and logging on to various sites but not through an application such as the toy

There are loads of free proxy sites that do this for you.

I used to use that when i frequented football forums...and want to wind them up and play devils advocate :)
